The Alexa Chung Style Guide
By: Olivia Marrone
Alexa Chung’s sense of style is difficult to pinpoint, which is also what makes her look so coveted. Eclectic, quirky, and always just the right mix of casually put together, the multi-hyphenate fashion mogul has been a style icon for years. Although it was challenging to select specific pieces and style elements that are reoccurring in Alexa’s fashion Rolodex, I was able to find five ways anyone can emulate her “Mod” and effortless rock ‘n’ roll style in their wardrobe.
These recommendations are based on her past and present outfits, all of which will give you the covetable “Alexa Chung look” without the commitment of getting bangs. Lucky for us Alexa is all about dressing practically, so follow these tips to look chic while remaining comfortable season after season.
Striped long-sleeve tops

From t-shirt style tops with quarter-length sleeves to thick knit sweaters, you can never go wrong with wearing a horizontally striped, long sleeve shirt. This top is one that Alexa has worn on multiple occasions, and she pairs it with everything: shorts, skirts, jeans, trousers, and under a pair of overalls. It’s understated and perfect for any occasion, while also being a classic print to have in your wardrobe. This style shirt is so versatile and will always be on-trend, so, really, purchasing one is a win-win for your wallet and love of Alexa’s style.
Miniskirts and dresses

Thanks to the revolutionary designs of Mary Quant & the “Mod” movement in London, miniskirts were all the rage in the 1960s. In the present day, Alexa Chung is a huge fan of the piece and has worn it in many different forms over the years. Be it leather, denim, leopard print, checked, or suede—miniskirts are a must if you’re looking to emulate Alexa Chung’s style. To achieve a similar look, pair your mini skirt with a t-shirt, blouse, or sweater on top with either loafers, converse, Mary Janes, or a pair of flat/heeled ankle boots. Another item Alexa has been known to wear is the shift dress. Pair your shift dress or any mini dress with a trench or peacoat on top, and you’ll be looking as chic as Alexa Chung in under five minutes!
Menswear

Along with her widespread collection of miniskirts and dresses, masculine pieces are also very present in Alexa Chung’s wardrobe. Often mixing these two styles together, Alexa’s eclectic fashion sense comes from her wide range of style icons. As shared in her book, IT, George Harrison, Mick Jagger, Jane Birkin, and characters like Annie Hall and Wednesday Adams are just a few of her style influences. This style mentality is what makes Alexa always casual yet put together. By working this mentality into your wardrobe your looks will feel more laid-back and effortlessly cool, while still working for whatever your day has in store.
Flat shoes

While she has worn heels to events and with casual outfits, Alexa Chung’s choice with footwear is usually a flat shoe. From loafers and ballet flats to converse and Chelsea boots, Alexa proves that flat shoes can be just as chic as a pair of heels (not to mention, they’re a lot more comfortable and practical for everyday wear). Alexa once said she’ll often pair a ballet flat with a dress to add balance to the look and make it less dressed-up, showcasing not only her love of flat shoes but also a key element to her overall approach to styling.
Peacoats

As we saw previously, Alexa Chung is a big fan of the “Mod” style aesthetic of the 1960s, and this piece is one that she’s worn many times. The silhouette of this coat is often straight, streamlined, and slightly cropped, which at the time was a popular silhouette across multiple garments. This design is also quintessentially British and had a modern revival via Alexa’s unique ways of styling it. Whether it’s with a flowy mini dress and ballet flats, over a t-shirt and jeans, or as the main piece of the outfit, this coat is one that is essential in Alexa’s wardrobe and will instantly give you her modern ’60s vibe.
By now, we know that Alexa Chung’s style includes a multitude of aspects: preppy meets rock ‘n’ roll, feminine mixed with masculine elements, and ‘“Mod” ’60s meets present-day. These style aspects aside, when looking at pictures from over the years (be it her street style or event attire) Alexa always looks confident in what she’s wearing, and this mentality is the key to truly achieving the “Alexa Chung look.” You can purchase the pieces I’ve mentioned above and remember her style mentality when putting your outfits together, but if you don’t feel comfortable in what you’re wearing, it’ll show. However, if you own the look you’re wearing not only will your confidence shine through, but you’re also already well on your way to achieving Alexa’s level of style status.
So when you’re putting together your next outfit and ask yourself: “What Would Alexa Do?,” remember that she would wear whatever she likes and own it, despite what others may think. That’s the essence of what makes Alexa Chung’s style sought after by so many loyal fashion observers: she’s always authentically herself.
