For his Spring/Summer 2022 collection debut, designer LaQuan Smith transformed the Empire State Building into a runway, becoming the first in history to do so.
In an interview with Vogue Magazine, Smith echoed his New York City roots and the monument’s impact on his youth. “I have the most vivid memories of being in grade school and going on field trips with my classmates to the Empire State Building,” he told Vogue. “I remember being in awe of its magnitude, so it’s really amazing all these years later to be showing my collection there.”
Smith’s extensive roster includes mega-celebrities Beyoncé, Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner, Lady Gaga, and more.
During his NYFW show, models walked the concrete observation deck with dramatic, winged eyes fitting for the city that never sleeps. Hues of burgundy, sapphire, pecan, and charcoal blinked with each step, reflecting the collection’s shimmering elegance and sophistication. The pieces themselves radiated with detail through carefully crafted laced evening wear, luxuriously casual lounge attire, and statement looks that exuded show-stopping simplicity.
Smith’s Spring/Summer 2022 pieces summarized his unapologetic and idiosyncratic signature which are continuously visible throughout his collections. His artistic creations constantly emanate a clear vision of his fashion viewpoint. You can view the full collection here.
