How Fashion Can Help You Land Any Job
By: Kennedy Smith
The most common line in a job interview is “tell me about yourself.” Usually, we try to provide an answer that will impress the interviewer such as information listed on our resume or cover letter. Here are a few reasons why you should consider mentioning your interest in fashion or listing work you’ve done in the field on your credentials when applying for a job or internship in any industry.
You’re creative
Fashion is more than clothes on a store rack. It’s an art and takes a creative mind to comprehend its vitality to society. Without creative roles such as designers, photographers, editors, stylists, makeup artists, critics, and more, there would be no fashion industry. Your interest in fashion conveys that you have creative thinking, which benefits all companies.
You keep up with current events
In the media, we see public figures dressed in outfits for certain events spanning from press conferences, meetings, and more. As someone who keeps up with fashion, you likely follow a platform that mentions public figures out-and-about noting what they are wearing. You keep your ear to the ground, which is admired by employers, as this shows you are a concerned citizen.
You have cultural awareness
Inclusion and diversity are important across industries now more than ever. Fashion reflects different cultures and includes historical significance through collections. Keeping a pulse on fashion includes being knowledgeable about practices and traditions in other countries, as these are usually reflected in designs and editorials.
You have a sense of individuality
What we wear is strategic and reflects where we are going, what we are about to do, how we feel, and our personality. Appreciating fashion is a testament to owning who you are and accepting yourself as an individual. Having a sense of individuality allows you to be more confident, which will only boost performance in all that you do.
You are open to change and able to adapt
There is always something new occurring in the fashion industry from trends, runway shows, appointments, and more. As someone who keeps up with fashion, you’re aware of the importance of being able to adapt to any environment. All industries face small or large shifts, so being able to adjust to new conditions is crucial.
You have a fresh perspective
Employers constantly seek new ways to move forward with their business. A fresh perspective is a key ingredient for innovation. You’ll provide a new outlook and way of thinking, as opposed to those who have spent most of their career in a specific industry and have become comfortable in how things currently operate. This makes the team stagnant and lacks any growth.
In short…
Being an enthusiast about anything makes you unique. Fashion is an important aspect of our lives and has been since the beginning of time. Keep these reasons in mind next time you’re applying for a job or internship!
