Dior Men’s Spring 2020 Teleports Us to the Future
By: Salma Ahmed
In a show that many described as having strong futuristic and post-apocalyptic undertones, Kim Jones reminded us of every reason we love him as the Creative Director of Dior Homme. For his spring collection for the brand, he showcased his endless innovation while still maintaining the brand’s identity.
Jones gave his guests much more than a fashion show, he gave them an experience. He went all out with the set design, making it a perfect fit for the collection that got to walk down its pink carpet, with the letters of the brand deconstructed front and center, foreshadowing the collection to come before it ever hit the runway.
The collection was dominated by neutrals, in true Dior Men fashion, but that did not stop Jones from adding his touch with bright colors. Amid the neutrals-based collection, the designer included surprising pops of blues, oranges, and even pinks. Although they only made a brief appearance, the colors elevated the collection and kept it exciting all throughout.
One of Jones’ most impressive skills as a designer is his ability to refresh and modernize the brand while still maintaining its core. Dior Men was mainly known for its well-tailored luxurious suits before Jones took over and he ensured to keep the suit the center of attention but with a modernized twist. He abandoned the classic silhouette for a slightly asymmetrical one created using light-catching fabrics, most of which were paired with metallic scarves that wrapped around the body so elegantly. His slight alterations freshened up the suits we are so used to seeing from pre-Jones Dior Men but they were still wearable.
Jones did not leave a single aspect of the collection unthought of, including accessories which he incorporated so cleverly as they complemented the clothes without taking the attention away from them. His accessories contributed a great deal to the collection being labeled as futuristic as they included an array of aluminum suitcases and backpacks which were created in collaboration with luggage brand RIMOWA. Another piece of accessory that caught our attention is Jones’ take on the widely loves Dior Saddle bag.
With every collection he sends down the runway, Jones gains our respect and admiration more and more. He is a mastermind who has managed to evolve a brand without stripping it from what makes the brand what it is, and we are forever grateful for what he has done for Dior Men.
