25 Must-See Looks From the 2022 Met Gala
By: Natalia Finnis-Smart
Lights, camera action! The 2022 Met Gala kicked off in New York City with extravagant red carpet looks we’ve been waiting to see all year. This year’s Met Gala theme, In America: An Anthology of Fashion, saw attendees with their respective designers unveil interpretations of American fashion during the Gilded Age.
The Gilded Age was a period in American history from about 1870 to 1900, during which rapid industrialization, a labor pool swelled by immigration, and minimal government regulation allowed the upper classes to accumulate great wealth and enjoy opulent lifestyles.
As guests made their way towards the coveted red carpet-covered Met steps, glitz and glamour take heed and the sole feeling of the Big Apple’s frigid Spring evening weather fades away,
Here are a few must-see looks for the 2022 Met Gala:
Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds
Co-chairs Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds gave every bit of regal in Versace and Ralph Lauren. Lively’s sequined tulle gown was inspired by New York City architecture. Her Versace gown transformed from copper to green, much like the Statue of Liberty has oxidized over time. Lively’s tiara was also modeled after Lady Liberty. Ryan Reynolds looked sharp in a signature Ralph Lauren suit and tie.
La La Anthony
Lala Anthony stunned in a burgundy LaQuan Smith gown with an accompanying tilted hat, and David Yurman earrings.
Legendary supermodel Naomi Campbell graced the red carpet in a custom wool Burberry gown and hand-embroidered crystalized gloves. She completed her look with a sparkling necklace and equally scintillating jewelry on her face.
Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour glowed in a kaleidoscopic floor-length Chanel dress with a feathery ensemble featuring prismatic beading and a jeweled tiara.
Sarah Jessica Parker
Sara Jessica Parker made a grand return wearing custom Christopher John Rogers and an opulent headpiece by milliner Philip Tracey.
Designer LaQuan Smith went classic in a grey cocktail jacket and trousers.
Vanessa Hudgens made her arrival known in a black, head to toe, Moschino ensemble.
Erykah Badu and headwear are always a match made in heaven. The music icon wore a patchworked and beaded Marni set and extravagant hat fitting for this year’s theme.
Shawn Mendes looked dapper in a Tommy Hilfiger suit, sleek black turtleneck underneath, and an oversized lapel coat with six golden buttons.
Alicia Keys and Swizz Beats
Alicia Keys didn’t hold back in a sleeveless sequined Ralph Lauren dress and attached cape with over 200,000 stone crystals embellished throughout, taking shape of New York City’s vast skyline. Her braided hairstyle by Fesa Nu with assistance from Jocelin Williams, contained nine circular compositions that stretched down the icon’s back. Swizz Beats clothed in the brand’s New York Yankees™ jacket, black a handmade dinner jacket from Ralph Lauren’s Purple Label underneath, black tuxedo trousers, and New Era cap from its MLB collaboration.
Rosalía reimagined the Gilded Age’s ruffled style as this element served as her Givenchy dress’ lower half with crystal embellishments adorned atop. The piece’s straps held together with a silver claw-like neck component before transitioning to laced mid-sleeves above crystalized long ones.
Details, details, details. Teyana Taylor certainly didn’t miss as she glowed in iridescent Iris Van Herpen along with Lillian Shalom headpiece and rings.
Cardi B and Donatella Versace
Donatella Versace and Cardi B came correct in electrifying Versace gowns that sparkled at every step. Donatella donned a single strapped aquamarine-golden gown and Cardi B in a chained regalia.
Also wearing Givenchy, the First Class rapper debuted a debonair style in a brown suit by the luxury fashion house.
Lizzo looked luxurious in connected, button up Thom Brown gown and paired golden floral decorated, floor length cape. Her accessories entailed a striking, wrap-around choker and hoop earrings. Did I mention she gave the red carpet a brief flute performance too?
Janelle Monae dazzled in a custom Ralph Lauren rhinestone dress coupled with a silver bibbed element and connecting headpiece.
Billie Eilish brought the house down with a custom Gucci corseted dress with long-sleeved lace, a jeweled choker and diamond rings.
Hailey Bieber was ethereal in a silk Yves Saint Laurent dress and feathery cover.
Sza stunned as she posed for the flashing lights in a fuchsia Vivienne Westwood corset-like piece, thigh-high latex heeled boots and opera gloves, and an oversized-rounded hat.
Winnie Harlow captured everyone’s attention with an angelic floral silhouette Iris Van Herpen dress and opulent headpiece.
The singer and actress glowed in an all-white Michael Kors ensemble and silver Bulgari accessories.
Jessica Chastain twinkled in custom Gucci. Her look fused a merlot sequined gown with crystal embroidery snaked throughout, a floor-length shall, and draped in diamonds from its High Jewelry line.
Ciara opted for an exquisite custom, off-the-shoulder Michael Kors zebra-print thigh-high slit dress, and foiled hair accessories.
Gigi Hadid put her best food forward in a ruby-toned custom Atelier Versace puffer coat and corset catsuit and sharp pointed boots.
Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson
And last but certainly not least, Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson made their Met Gala debut as a couple. Kim illuminated the room in a dress originally worn by Marilyn Monroe as the late star sang to President John F. Kennedy at his birthday party. Pete sported a signature tuxedo set and tinted shades.
